With summer school out, recording is on my mind. The last days of class were filled with brutal passive aggression and misdirected energy towards my work as a vocaliod. Strange mirrors arose, from my understanding of programming verse the nature of human communication. What I have is a suitable interior shower to learn from, ready? communicate.

 

Polyphony is a texture consisting of two or more independent melodic voices,

as opposed to one voice (monophony) or one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords (homophony).

Harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords.

The romance of voice processing and signal delay is my continual fascination. Simultaneously signal is transmitted and laced with language . The delay of understanding, impairing distance between the send and receive. With the harmonizer on the DVP  there is no master/slave relation as required by the vocoder and internal wave function.  5 tones can be programmed to 1 voice setting.


I presented a recording (score posted above) to mark 1 minute intervals, for a 1 time performance. Every transition indicated at a minute mark added a tone change to the narrating voice over 21 minutes. The score was based off of a of Stéphan Schaub’s Analysis of 16 WINDS BY IANNIS XENAKIS. A perceptual change occurs in the audience even without a gained awareness.

 

With only a nights work of audio (as was the case with the rapid succession of the class) the results were as followed:

 

I received both negative and positive feedback in authority over the audio work. Technical difficulties were the first separation of myself from the group, as these concerns were outside the awareness of the performers. This I burdened fondly, as setting up audio equipment and tacking consoles in a timed setting is thrilling, an immense joy, and truly a practice I wish to continue til I die.

 

At the final day of the performance I slept in, as it was dark and rainy out. I had brought my DVP home to program voices for my solo and decided to stay in a little longer to program a few more transitions. When programming sound, it is best to monitor the sound in a space rather than on headphones.

 

I walked in to the final dress rehearsal (late but) without missing a queue. Afterward the only male performer in the group approached me to explain the group had decided to cut the audio.  Beginning “ How important is the audio?” which I did not address. Instead I entered a call and response mode to keep the mood somber,  the final performance w/ audience  was  an hour away. Tension was high cut throat,  solution was sacrifice, that being my contribution. Internally I called the last lines of GROWIN by SSION:

DON’T BE A QUEEN
JUST BE A DRAGON

to calm the displacement of effort. 10 minutes later another performer approached me with a similar discourse:  one in representation of many (2-5 voices),  she ended with “keep the audio if it is important.” addressing not everyone had agreed to cut it.

 

Without a chance to meet again with the whole, I kept it. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.  My slot to direct was the first 3 minutes of the 21. I figure that after 3 minutes anyone could  walk up and unplug the ipod. The unforeseeable digression was I became a performing pile of tubes, only robotic gestures.  Re-watching the performance I cried shortly after for the compress contorted posture, fleshy over relaxed gravitated thighs. The socially awkward pile of mush I had turned in to from the uncertainty of the groups decision to turn me on or off. 

Calculating gestures and running a program does not constitute life, it is only a frame for potential action to inhabit.

Harmonics need restraint, complex already, patterns should be clear and easy for others to address. Symmetrical deliberation should be in place, not a tipping scale- once a formula completes a cycle, then it can be used properly. I only put  love in my harmonics. I acted in love for the community and with the power and talent it granted me.  The female criminal against authority is presupposed.  But what happened here was in the process of hearing.  Part of a self which was challenged. Mental property had to reconfigure for the upgrade.  A mixture of polarities can always go anywhere, and anywhere is always the same.
